I am Joe McHarg, an architect by education, and profession. I have practiced architecture for over three decades. A good deal of my experience as an artist developed from doing architectural plans and illustrations. In addition to my architectural work, I have always enjoyed producing works of "visual art". It has provided a wonderful counterpoint to the precise work involved in architectural drawings: the highly precise vs. the "free and spontaneous".
I still work with the same media that I have used in architectural work: India ink, graphite pencil and acrylic paint on archival quality mylar film (Polyethylene Terephthalate, for you inquiring minds), probably the most long-lasting and durable drawing surface ever invented. This is the same material that museums use to protect their rare documents. It is inert, inorganic, waterproof and formulated to last for hundreds of years.
I am constantly experimenting with new ideas and varied subject types. I fully expect that to be the case for the rest of my life. I do not intend to ever develop just one "style", or zero in on a single subject type (despite a weakness for attractive female subjects). Other than that, I don't have any deep philosophical ideas about my art except that I want to produce beautiful works that people will enjoy and be proud to have hanging on their walls.
